Eurobarometer CYBER SECURITY 2014

European Report contains the results of a public survey about online security in the 28 EU countries to facilitate the understanding of the individual’s awareness of the dangers that lurk on the Internet and about their negative experiences and  concerns in this regard.

Internet access

The study showed that despite the wide availability of the Internet, which is used daily by 63% of people, it is still 24% who have never used the internet. It’s still the most widespread access to the Internet via a PC by 92%, over 61% by mobile phone and tablet use is 30% (the latest two are increasing exponentially).

Internet use

The purpose of the joint use of the Internet:

  • e-mail 86%
  • reading news 63%
  • social networking 60%
  • buying goods and services 57%
  • online bank 54%
  • online games 29%
  • selling of goods and services 23%
  • watching TV 22%
  • Others 5%
  • do not know 1%

Web security

Since the previous survey in 2013 has increased concerns about the safety of online payments and protecting personal data. Therefore, the increase in the number of installed anti-virus programs that are now being used by 61% of people, 49% no longer opens mail messages from unknown persons and 38% are more cautious in outsourcing of personal data on the Internet.

Still, more than half of people feel that they are not sufficiently informed about all the dangers and risks on the Internet. Larger the use of the Internet in the country, the greater is the awareness of online dangers and concern for protection.

Unpleasant situations in which they were victims

Negative things that they experienced on the Internet:

  • detection of malware (spyware, adware, …) 47%
  • a mail or call with the acquisition of personal information such as user name and password to access computer 31%
  • accidental discovery of hate content14%
  • intrusion into the personal account on the social network 12%
  • experienced online fraud 12%
  • get the message about pay for the re-access computer files and 8%
  • online banking and credit card fraud 8%
  • accidentally landed on the content of child pornography 7%

The main findings are that people are increasingly aware of the danger posed to the Internet and some have successfully protect it from Unfortunately, a vast majority still does not know how, even they are increasingly worried. It is still the motto: this can not happen to me.
